Restructuration of Fórum Picoas - Competition
After more than a decade of continuing decay, PT decided to launch a competition for the recasting of the commercial areas of Fórum Picoas. It is a vast set of dark and inadequate spaces for today's necessities of both the building and the city. These spaces interface with the street and therefore transfer to the whole building a dated and decadent appearance, which have progressively driven away consumers and audience from what was originally though as a "Forum" for Communication Technologies.
This could not be a more actual theme.
The project suggests a restructuring of the exterior space by designing a public square at the entrance of the Fórum, thus marking in the city a new pulsing presence. Inside, a deep "surgery" goes through all the public spaces.
The rapid and continuous evolution of Communication Technologies is so vigorous that we are always, at all times, being disrupted and updated with new conquests and breakthroughs. Instantaneous information, density and high-tech sophistication are the working raw materials of this project.
A multimedia glassy surface is present in all the main spaces. It irradiates light and broadcasts contents. Sometimes it becomes sensitive to movement and acquires interactive properties. New technologic products are displayed and described. Bridging the latest breakthroughs in technology or the cinematographic fictions, we are granted access to the information and ethereal images that flow at spinning speed on the glass panels.
A programmed variation of tone and light intensity transforms progressively our perception of each space. Occasionally, a wall/ceiling plan becomes a display where suddenly is shown information/images of new devices still in experimental stages. Further ahead, another one shows images of the latest NASA discovery, broadcasted from the space telescope Hubble.
Indoors, the atmosphere of the new Forum "pulses": in multimodal variation of the contents received and emitted, or simply of the weather characteristics, or just of the state of mind of each observer.
