ARX

Gijón Museum

The project submited by ARX Portugal (in partnership with Chapman Taylor España) for the Gijón Museum competition qualified in second place. It was, however, excluded later due to documentation flaws.

The competition assumed the creation of a museological complex in Gijón, a city in the Spanish region of Asturias, rehabilitating the old baroque convent of the Augustinian Recollect Order, occupied since the 19th century by a tobacco factory.
ARX’s project creates a “time polyhedron”, in which one can recognize the past, the contingencies experienced by the building up until the present, by the means of a deliberate contemporary intervention.

Bearing in mind that this is also an urban project, this museum is then something more than a City Museum, it is a Museum-city, open to urban flows, to different programs and seasons. It allows a trail among the urban thread, the museum square and the park over the Cantabric Sea, down to the Eduardo Chillida’s sculpture, Elogio del Horizonte (Praise to the Horizon).
