We spoke with Público P3 about our project Villa Maria Pia, where the rehabilitation of the old chalet is highlighted.
“Built in the 19th century, the chalet of Queen D. Maria Pia de Sabóia, in Monte Estoril, was rehabilitated in 2023, with the aim of preserving its “heritage and historical” character, says architect Nuno Mateus, responsible for the work, to P3. The intention, he emphasizes, was clear: to maintain the original, without “any innovative features”.
Overlooking the Cascais Bay and located right in front of the sea, the building showed signs of natural degradation in constructions highly exposed to sea air — for example, the corrosion of the stone columns that limit the balcony on the first floor. However, for the architect from the ARX Portugal studio, these are one of the most relevant architectural elements of the work and, therefore, they were rehabilitated instead of replaced. “Erosion is part of the passage of time,” he says.”
