Casa no Sabugo

Description

The site of Casa no Sabugo is in a rural area, anchored to an old urban settlement. It has a slight slope in a north-south direction, making it possible to project a volume recessed into the topography. The new building is therefore built at an intermediate height, dividing the property into two parts.

The house is organized in a single-storey rectangular volume, with a simple gable cross-section and a very small apparent volume. Taking as a reference the farmhouse – an ambiguous, pragmatic and multipurpose typology from the rural repertoire – the built volume is organized by juxtaposing functions, articulated in sub-groups interspersed by semi-covered patios, creating an apparently simple and homogeneous body. Above all, the intention is for a subtle fit and a volume that presents itself from the top with a formal vocabulary of the basic archetype of the house.

From the street, to the east, the volume is organized from a thick wall, which accommodates storage and technical areas. This is followed by a large, semi-covered exterior porch – a transitional space for accessing the house, where cars can even enter. The house is accessed from this porch, either through the main entrance or the garage. Along the corridor that occupies the northern area of the house, the south-facing bedrooms are distributed and the living room opens onto the patio, which in turn extends out into the landscape.
