Parede
Description
The plot is located on Domingos José Morais Street in Parede, Cascais—an attractive seaside area situated between the railway line and the Marginal Avenue, predominantly occupied by single-family houses.
We decided to reflect on the recurring process in this area of subdividing former single-family chalets into multi-family apartment buildings. These are typically buildings composed of several volumes, set on robust bases of Azul Cascais stone and crowned with elaborate roofs. In general, this condition occurs on tree-lined streets, where multiple private gardens create a pleasant atmosphere of постоян contact with nature.
For this reason, rather than opting for a single large-scale building, we chose to subdivide the overall massing into three separate buildings, surrounded by generous gardens. In terms of interior spaces, each volume—divided into four apartments—has been spatially developed to maximize the capture of natural light, the relationship with the gardens, visual alignments toward the sea, and the geometric complexity offered by the sloping roof planes.
In its exterior and material characterization, in addition to formal references to the geometric articulation of the chalets, we opted for just two materials that define the character of the houses built there throughout the 20th century and are environmentally sustainable: stone—which clads the entirety of the lower-floor volumes—and fired clay used in the surrounding roofs, which clads the entire upper floor and the roofs.
