START Campus Sines DC
Description
The Sines 4.0 Data Center (DCS) is a large-scale, technically complex data facility that forms part of the national strategy for digital transformation and for positioning Portugal as a global technology platform. It is a building filled with servers dedicated to data storage and computing, a space commonly known as the cloud.
Located in an area of high strategic importance and prepared for this purpose—the so-called ZILS (Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone), next to the port and energy infrastructures—the project was initially conceived, though later abandoned, as a reuse of the decommissioned Thermoelectric Plant on the site.
The architectural language of the complex reflects the technological nature of the program, adopting industrial and scalable construction solutions that allow for future expansion without compromising overall performance. Environmentally, it prioritizes the use of renewable energy, low-impact cooling systems, and efficient management of water and energy resources to reduce its carbon footprint.
The overall coordination of the licensing and execution project, carried out by ARX, involved integrating multiple technical specialties and coordinating stakeholders from various countries, ensuring strict compliance with regulatory frameworks as well as performance and certification requirements.
