Terraços do Monte
Description
As you walk up Rua Damasceno Monteiro, there’s an extraordinary visual opening onto Baixa and Rossio. When we imagined a building for this place, we designed it from this relationship with the city, from this strategic point. This is a building that is not a continuous block and therefore allows this occasional visual crossing to be maintained and continue to belong to the city. It also opens up the possibility of opening windows and balconies from the side, orientated towards the valley, so that the rooms along the street are not limited to windows orientated towards the buildings opposite.
Starting from the search for the archetype of Lisbon architecture, the aim was for this to contaminate the quality and sobriety of contemporary architecture, from the urban scale to the finest details. Damasceno Monteiro’s façade takes Lisbon’s character more literally – the vertical windows, the lioz stone, the tiles – while on the other side, the dwellings overlook the view from large balconies, rhythmically modelled on stone pilasters.
In a conceptual journey of subtlety and the appearance of simplicity, the interior spaces that are discovered stand out for their immense spatial quality.
In a succinct approach, the architectural concept is based on the idea of a ‘belvedere building’, taking it to the extreme by allowing people to look out over the surroundings and creating platforms (terraces and balconies) for enjoying the extraordinary landscape.
