Rua da República
Description
The project starts from identifying the lack of qualified public space in the surrounding area, of gathering places for the population, and that can serve as a counterpoint to the built density of Loures’ centre.
In this sense, this residential and commercial building (with ground-floor retail) is configured to delimit and enclose a new public square, landscaped and partially planted with trees that radiate outward, creating shaded areas and giving this part of the city a more welcoming character. Essentially, a place where urban life happens spontaneously, flowing between the use of the services located there and chance encounters at a coffee spot or in the shade of a tree.
From the “U”-shaped volume that defines the square, several sections of the building radiate outward in various directions toward the surroundings, proposing urban connections and/or continuities with future buildings that may be built nearby. On the upper floors, the 225 apartments vary in their orientation between overlooking the central square and views over the surrounding Loures.
