Sines Data Center
Description
In 2021, we were challenged to reflect on the rehabilitation of the Sines Thermal Power Plant with the aim of installing a state-of-the-art Data Center there. The proposal aimed to recover a landmark structure in the Portuguese industrial landscape.
At a time when sustainability in architecture demands serious reflection on demolition versus adaptation, this proposal affirmed the importance of intervening on existing structures—recognizing the potential to regenerate obsolete infrastructure through rehabilitation, reducing environmental impact, and extending the lifespan of buildings.
Faced with the ecological imperative to conserve before demolishing and aware of the collective memory that these structures hold, this project continues to raise pertinent questions about the heritage value of industrial architecture and its potential for new uses.
