Brick is Red

Brick is Red takes the reader’s eyes through a series of images, text fragments and graphic schemes, extracted from the most common designing tools in ARX. Following a wide range arch, from the first sketches to the complete built work, some additional aspects usually crossing our creative practice are here gradually disclosed.

Even though this “unveiling” may reveal a clearly systematized operative methodology, it is nevertheless a non-linear process crossed by doubt, contingency, failure, error and surprise. It is then a universe of uncertainty that opens up without filters or explanations, leaving up to the reader the opportunity to interpret the material here put forth.

In architecture, a great part of the composition process entails the architect’s interaction with others. Likewise, Brick is Red is a book with many interactions: the architects, photographers, the graphic designer, who altogether appropriates their images (as he works on them) and a writer.

To the likeness of the countless scale-models produced by ARX throughout the years, this book takes on a thorough craftsmanship, endowed with strong tactile dimension, where front and back covers are made of the material most often used in model building at the atelier: grey recycled cardboard. The expressiveness of this “raw” material and the absence of a book spine, exposing its black-thread stitches binding the signatures, suggest an unfinished book, a work-in-progress, a construction site.
